Hi,

Phew. School is officially out or almost out. Congratulate your son or daughter, and give yourself a pat on the back for supporting your child through another school year.

The prospect of summer can be exciting – or overwhelming. EdNews Parent is here to share tips to keep your child engaged with learning, safe and healthy over the next couple months. However, the newsletter will become more sporadic, resuming a weekly schedule in early August.

If you have topics you’d like addressed, please let us know. And, have you ever considered hosting an exchange student? Read  Confessions of a Partially Proficient Parent to see if it’s an experience for you. Enjoy!

This week’s healthy rewards for kids tip

As part of a new campaign to attack childhood obesity and improve children’s health and learning, we offer you tips about healthy snacks and non-food rewards. If you do reward your kids for good behavior or deeds, consider offering them something other than food as a treat – a bike ride, a trip to a park, a hike, or hula hoop contest in the backyard. Better yet, get dad out with a hoop. Who needs popsicles or cookies when you can see something as rare as a man hula hooping?

Year-round school poll results

Of the people who took last week’s poll on year-round school, 100 percent agreed with me and said they were open to the idea of year-round school!!! I might just have to start a campaign. I’d still like to hear from more of you, though. Read this end-of-school blog post and take the poll.
